New Brunswick Youth in Care Scholarship

The New Brunswick Youth in Care Scholarship program is a tuition and mandatory program fees waiver program for individuals who spent 12 months or more placed as a child in care in New Brunswick, including foster care, group home care, and other forms of care.

 

Eligibility

  • Resident of New Brunswick.
  • Is or have lived in the care of the New Brunswick Minister under Social Development or a First Nations Child and Family Services Agency, for a minimum of twelve consecutive or cumulative months (365 days) under the Family Services Act. It could be as part of the Youth Engagement and Young Adult Services, kinship placement, etc. 
  • Must consent to a Release of Information for the verification process with the designated care organization, Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour (PETL) and the post-secondary institution named in this application.
  • Been admitted into a recognized post-secondary institution within the province of New Brunswick in a below-graduate level course or program of study.
  • Not already receiving tuition funding through WorkingNB or Social Development, such as the TSD (Training and Skills Development).
  • Pursuing a first-degree diploma or certificate.
  • Full-time and part-time students are eligible.
  • Must be below the age of 26 when entering education.

  • Applications are reviewed in the order they are received.
  • The program will remain open until all available funds have been allocated.
  • Funding is only available one year at a time. Applications for the next school year will be accepted once we receive confirmation of renewed program funding.
  • Students must apply each year, and are not guaranteed funding for subsequent years.
  • As funding is limited, we encourage you to apply as early as possible.

Applications are reviewed in the order they are received. As funding is limited, we encourage you to apply as early as possible for the 2025-2026 school year.

Applicants with a study program starting in September 2025 MUST submit an application before July 20, 2025. 

All other applicants MUST submit their application a MINIMUM of 45 days in advance of their study program's start date.

What happens after you have applied?

1- The Foundation verifies your eligibility with your designated care organization and confirms your enrolement with the post-secondary institution indicated on your application.

-There is nothing for you left to do, except wait for our email.

 

2- The student will be notified using the email on the application form, whether their application is rejected or conditionally approved.

-The Condition being, attending your classes once your program starts.

 

3- Your post-secondary institution will be notified that your tuition and mandatory fees will be covered by The NBCC Foundation on behalf of PETL. Please note that in case you do not complete your study program, and where a reimbursement of tuition would be done, the money will be returned to The NBCC Foundation. 

-Again, there is nothing for you to do, except attend class. The money will be sent directly to the institution.

 

4-You will receive your T4A from the post-secondary institution during the year, per their policy.

5- Remember to re-apply next year to continue your studies.

Q: What does the scholarship cover?

A: This scholarship covers your tuition and mandatory program fees (regular program) offered at standard tuition rates.

 

Q: If I am a part-time student, am I eligible?

A: Yes, the program is open to both full- and part-time students. 

 

Q: I was in foster care years ago as a child but am not currently. Am I eligible?

A: As long as the other requirements are met.

 

Q: If I was in foster care outside of New Brunswick, do I qualify?

A: No, only those who lived in care in New Brunswick for a minimum of one year qualify.

 

Q: Why do I need to give consent to share information?

A: To confirm a student's eligibility by being in the care of the New Brunswick Minister under Social Development or First Nations Child and Family Services Agencies for a minimum of 12 months (cumulative).  Also to confirm the student's tuition and program fees with the recognized post-secondary institution that accepted the student. 

 

Q: Can I apply to the scholarship program this year if I'm only enrolled to start my program next year?

A: No. We do not keep applications for the next school year. You must apply during the same school year you will attend.

 

Q: If I applied to the scholarship program last year, do I need to re-apply this year to be eligible?

A: Yes. You must re-apply every year to be eligible. Each application only covers the semesters included in that one year.

 

Q: If I have not applied for this scholarship and my first semester has already begun, am I eligible to apply for the next semester?

A: Yes. As long as the other requirements are met. You can apply for the next semester of that same year.
